WHAT'S NEW

Find Your Financial Footing for the New Year
This past September, Women 4 Women hosted financial guru and Washington Post columnist Michelle Singletary at their Annual Luncheon, where she spoke on everything from her financial roots to the importance of charitable giving. In the midst of this trying economic climate, Singletary also offered a way to help people find their financial footing. For 21 days, Singletary suggested saving as much as possible and spending money on absolute necessities only. No eating out. No trips to the beauty salon. No shopping (except for groceries).
Alina Pabin-Prusak, executive director of the Kentucky Indiana Paralyzed Veterans of America, was in attendance, and she accepted the challenge. “In the back of your mind, you know when you aren’t spending money appropriately, but it’s hard to change that behavior,” she said. “This turned out to be a real epiphany for me.” For three weeks, Alina brought her lunch to work every day. She didn’t go shopping. She didn’t use credit or debit cards, and she paid with cash only. The following month, Alina was able to put $400 in her savings account. She didn’t have a credit card bill at all. She paid down balances and now hopes to be debt-free in two years.
In 2010, make it one of your resolutions to get your finances back on track. Try the 21 Day Challenge to become more aware of where you are spending unnecessarily. Create a budget, review every expense, and determine areas where you can save. Then, challenge family members to cut back on unnecessary items to reduce their spending $1-$10 per week. If you need more help, try the Women 4 Women Finance 4 Her™ program. Finance 4 Her™ focuses on educating women and their families to make sound financial decisions and create a personal financial and career plan. Thanks to support from JP Morgan Chase Foundation, The UPS Foundation and PNC Bank it’s free and offered through many Louisville funding partners and agencies. Classes are being held throughout 2010. Please visit our website at www.w4w.org, or contact Margo Waddell at (502) 561-8060 ext. 228 for more information.
It’s a new year and a new decade. Celebrate it with newfound financial confidence!
