Goal: Produce and ensure implementation of the Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation Fit 4 Me program to improve the health of 10,000 girls and their families by 2010.
Vision: Substantially improve the health of women and girls in our community and significantly reduce obesity, smoking and teen pregnancy by 2020.
Current Status: Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation Fit 4 Me is a 6-week extra-curricular program to improve the health status and self-esteem of underserved middle school girls by encouraging healthy lifestyle habits taught in health and nutrition lessons along with physical fitness activity sessions led by University of Louisville student athletes who serve as role models.
266 girls have participated in the program to date
198 University of Louisville student athletes have participated
2,809 – number of volunteer hours by UofL role models and community volunteers
6 sites (schools/community centers) have been served through the program
In 2008, the program will expand from our current two sites to three. We will also develop a “tool kit” and a volunteer/student training program to allow other interested schools, community centers and organizations to implement the program at their own sites.
